Natural England continues to deliver Catchment Sensitive Farming (CSF) in partnership with Defra and the Environment Agency. CSF operates through a network of Catchment Sensitive Farming Officers (CSFOs) and local partners in each priority catchment. CSF aims to help meet Water Framework Directive targets and drinking water quality standards by reducing diffuse water pollution from agriculture (DWPA).

The role of the CSFO is to

  • Evaluate diffuse water pollution issues within specific catchments;
  • Work in priority areas to develop and lead CSF training advice and campaigns for farmers and landowners;
  • Secure ownership and solutions in specific areas on key pollution issues;
  • Work with CSF air quality lead in promoting and advising on good practice to reduce agricultural emissions;
  • Drive delivery through specialist training and advice, advocating and through providing support and advice on the delivery of Countryside Stewardship where appropriate;
  • Work with partners and stakeholders to deliver a joined up approach in catchments with diffuse water pollution issues;
  • Work with the contract manager to provide timely information on tenders for group events and farm advice, monitoring quality and success;
  • Record and evaluate interactions and advice provided to identify effectiveness of interventions.

The role will mainly involve site and farm visits and partnership working in and around North Yorkshire and South Yorkshire.

The Yorkshire & northern Lincolnshire Area Team within Natural England stretches from the Yorkshire Dales and the Pennines river systems in the west across to the Hull catchments in the east and the river Don catchment to the south. Catchment Sensitive Farming helps support a range of environmental outcomes on water and air for the area, alongside other activities such as agri-environment schemes, statutory planning work, regulation and enforcement. The team engages with a wide range of partners and customers, including AHDB, CFE and Yorkshire Water in delivering best practice advice and innovative approaches to reduce water and air pollution from agriculture. The work also contributes to the Government's 25 Year Plan for the Environment, delivering the outcomes of the Water Framework Directive.
