Local Nature Recovery Strategies (LNRS) are an exciting stepchange in approach to nature recovery in England. A flagship measure in the Environment Act, they will establish a new framework to plan for nature, laying the foundations of the nationwide Nature Recovery Network (NRN) – a major commitment of the 25 Year Environment Plan (25 YEP). LNRSs are defined as: “A system of locally led, evidence based, collaboratively produced strategies that cover the whole of England, with each one mapping existing areas of value for nature, establishing priorities for nature’s recovery and mapping locations where action for nature, or use of nature-based solutions would be particularly beneficial”.

Natural England has a critical part to play in planning and delivering this landmark initiative. We are looking for Senior Advisers to work in our Area Teams to play a leading role in introducing LNRSs, build strong partnerships, and contribute directly to LNRS production. As a Local Nature Recovery Senior Adviser, you will:

  • Encourage close collaboration – working with statutory agencies, protected landscapes, planning authorities, environmental NGOs, and other local partners – to drive action for nature recovery;
  • Contribute directly to the production of LNRSs, drawing on your knowledge and Natural England colleagues’ knowledge of nature and the natural environment;
  • Benefit from an extensive learning and development programme, through which you will build your leadership and collaboration skills and a broad-ranging technical expertise;
  • Work with local partners to identify and develop their capacity and skills, and create LNRS networks to foster sharing of ideas and information and establish connectivity across different LNRS areas;
  • Engage in a variety of key policy areas and delivery mechanisms related to LNRS, such as Biodiversity Net Gain, Environmental Land Management, and Green Infrastructure, bringing these policies into LNRS development and decision making;
  • Shape strategic approaches that enable a wide range of people to connect with nature.

We need passionate candidates who enjoy collaborating with others, who share our desire to see more, bigger, better, connected nature-rich places throughout England, and who want to help realise this vision. This is a fantastic opportunity to use your previous experience and transferable skills to bring a wide range of people and organisations together to plan for ambitious nature recovery.

You will work closely with local and national colleagues sitting in teams across Natural England. You will be central to forming strong working relationships with local authorities to establish LNRS in the context of local planning. You will need to be flexible and opportunistic in the role that Natural England plays to secure better outcomes for nature, and you will need to be responsive to the needs of our local partners.
